The National Golf League is gearing up to start its second season of play on August 5th. Last year the NGL made its debut with six Northern California teams. This year the NGL will have two Divisions, six Northern and six Southern California teams with talks of new teams forming in 2007 in Arizona, Florida and the Great Lake States.

Expansion teams are up for sale and if your thinking about owning a team, this year is the time to buy. Currently the going rate is $30,000. Next year there are talks of stricter restrictions for owning a team. Last year I did a short write up on the debut of the National Golf League.
Here's a recap:
"There's a new Pro Golf League in town. Yesterday I attended the debut of the National Golf League here in the Sacramento area. The first event took place at the Wildhorse Golf Course in Davis, California, which is home to Davis Zone. The league is looking to expand to other parts of the California region. At present, the National Golf League is home to the Silicon Valley Drivers, San Francisco Spin, Sacramento Eagles, East Bay Power, Sonoma-Marin Breakers and Davis Zone.

The National Golf League promotes golf team play. 27 holes of golf are played separated by 3 rounds of golf. The format includes Alternate Shot, Best Ball and The Scramble.
Here's what the site (http://www.nationalgolfleague.com) has to say about its new league:
The idea of “team play” will enhance the game of golf with new strategies and innovative coaching techniques. It will establish new rivalries that mirror other sports. As the popularity increases, media will have a new, stimulating league to extend its coverage to increased audiences. Players are enthusiastic about a new venue, one that offers an alternative to the traditional tours. Like other professional leagues, the NGL will cater to its customer – the golf fan and create a new accessible stage.
You got to know I've already been thinking, "How can I make this into a Fantasy Golf Game".
It's exciting, it's energizing! The teams are separated into two from each team and they are started out on different holes for each round of play until they all complete 9 holes. Once they all come in, another round starts. Some players played one or two rounds and others played three. I got the opportunity to follow the Davis Zone team, which one of our very own members (Tee-it-Up1, Renee' MacDonald) is a part of. Not only was I impressed with her play, I was also impressed with her fellow teammates as well as all members of the National Golf League. You couldn't help but cheer for the incredible shots made. I got the opportunity to witness an amazing 50 foot putt shot and a shot made from under the trees hit right onto the green. This is competitive golf at its finest, but played in a team play format. A score cart followed a team of players so you were always in the loop to whom scored. Throughout play only one point separated the top leading teams, which kept going back and forth. With four holes remaining, darkness started to come into play while golfers were scrambling to their next hole. The last hole of round three was worth 3 points. That could either make a win or break a win. As we headed towards the clubhouse no points had been tallied as they waited for all players to come in. Interviews were taking place. Dreams of PGA were voiced and expressed, and I was in ear shot of. This was exciting and I got the opportunity to be a part of it. As they completed their final scores, it left a tie between the East Bay Power and the Davis Zone, both with a total score of 30. In the event of a tie, the winner is the one who has the most points scored in round 3. East Bay Power had 13 and Davis Zone had 11. I was only out there for 7 hours, while some of the golfers were out there for 11 and 12 hours. You ask, was this exciting?……You better believe this was EXCITING!!!"
I will be more involved with one of the Northern California teams this year and will keep you informed of new developments. Check out the web site for more information. http://www.nationalgolfleague.com
